How to Play Impostor: Rules, Strategy & 60+ Word Pairs

8 min read

Impostor is the party game where everyone shares a secret word — except one person. That person has to bluff their way through the round without getting caught. Simple to learn, surprisingly tense, and it reveals who among your friends is a natural liar.

What Is Impostor?

Impostor is a social deduction word game. Every player receives the same secret word — except the impostor, who gets a different word (or nothing at all). Players take turns giving clues about their word without saying it directly. The group then votes on who they think the impostor is. The impostor wins by staying hidden long enough or by correctly guessing the group's word at the end. Everyone else wins by identifying the impostor before they escape.

The Basic Rules

You will need: 3+ players (best with 5–8)

How to play:

  1. One player opens the app — it secretly assigns the group word to everyone and gives the impostor a different word (or no word at all).
  2. Keep your word secret. Do not show your screen to anyone.
  3. Go around the circle. Each player gives exactly one clue — a word, a short phrase, or a description — that relates to their word without saying it outright.
  4. After everyone has given a clue, the group discusses and votes on who they think the impostor is.
  5. The player with the most votes is eliminated and reveals their role.

The impostor wins if:

  • They survive the vote (not eliminated), OR
  • They are eliminated but correctly guess the group's word

The group wins if:

  • They vote out the impostor and the impostor fails to guess the word

Tip: The impostor should listen carefully to every clue. By the end of the round, they will have enough context to make an educated guess — even if they had no idea at the start.

60+ Word Pairs

The challenge in Impostor comes from how close (or how far apart) the two words are. Use easier pairs to warm up new players, then switch to deceptive pairs once everyone knows the game.

Easy Pairs

The impostor's word is clearly different. Good for learning the game — the impostor must work hard to blend in.

  • Group: Dog / Impostor: Cat
  • Group: Pizza / Impostor: Burger
  • Group: Ocean / Impostor: Desert
  • Group: Piano / Impostor: Drum
  • Group: Summer / Impostor: Winter
  • Group: Castle / Impostor: Tent
  • Group: Football / Impostor: Tennis
  • Group: Chef / Impostor: Plumber
  • Group: Paris / Impostor: Tokyo
  • Group: Diamond / Impostor: Coal
  • Group: Shark / Impostor: Rabbit
  • Group: Hospital / Impostor: Library
  • Group: Candle / Impostor: Lamp
  • Group: Train / Impostor: Plane
  • Group: Snowflake / Impostor: Raindrop

Medium Pairs

The words share some overlap. The impostor can borrow clues from the group — but a slip will give them away.

  • Group: Coffee / Impostor: Tea
  • Group: Guitar / Impostor: Violin
  • Group: Cake / Impostor: Pie
  • Group: River / Impostor: Lake
  • Group: Cinema / Impostor: Theatre
  • Group: Jacket / Impostor: Coat
  • Group: Bicycle / Impostor: Motorbike
  • Group: Honey / Impostor: Jam
  • Group: Lighthouse / Impostor: Windmill

  • Group: Jungle / Impostor: Forest
  • Group: Lemon / Impostor: Lime
  • Group: Architect / Impostor: Engineer
  • Group: Poster / Impostor: Painting

Hard Pairs

The words are very close. Even the group might start doubting each other.

  • Group: Beach / Impostor: Pool
  • Group: Sunrise / Impostor: Sunset
  • Group: Shower / Impostor: Bath
  • Group: Whisper / Impostor: Secret
  • Group: Museum / Impostor: Gallery
  • Group: Motorway / Impostor: Street
  • Group: Porridge / Impostor: Cereal
  • Group: Fog / Impostor: Mist
  • Group: Memoir / Impostor: Diary

  • Group: Cliff / Impostor: Hill
  • Group: Wool / Impostor: Silk
  • Group: Whisky / Impostor: Rum
  • Group: Crow / Impostor: Raven
  • Group: Cushion / Impostor: Pillow

Deceptive Pairs

Near-identical concepts. The impostor can mirror the group almost perfectly — and the group will spend the vote arguing with each other.

  • Group: Mirror / Impostor: Window
  • Group: Shadow / Impostor: Reflection
  • Group: Dream / Impostor: Memory
  • Group: Fear / Impostor: Anxiety
  • Group: Speed / Impostor: Momentum

  • Group: Smile / Impostor: Laugh
  • Group: Storm / Impostor: Thunder
  • Group: Crowd / Impostor: Queue
  • Group: Hunger / Impostor: Appetite
  • Group: Journey / Impostor: Trip
  • Group: Error / Impostor: Mistake
  • Group: Genius / Impostor: Talent

Strategy for the Group

Listen for clues that are too safe. The impostor tends to give vague, generic clues that could apply to almost anything. If someone says "it's nice" or "people like it", push them to be more specific.

Watch for clues that are too specific. Paradoxically, an impostor who has picked up on the word from previous clues may overcorrect and give a clue that is too precise — a detail only someone with the real word would know. This also reads as suspicious.

Don't rush the vote. Let everyone give a clue first. The more clues the group shares, the more information the impostor has — but also the more chances they have to slip up.

Make your own clue clear enough to help the group, not so clear it hands the word to the impostor. There is a balance: clues that are too cryptic don't help your team, but clues that are too obvious let the impostor coast.

Strategy for the Impostor

Listen before you speak. The first clue is the hardest. If you go early in the round, keep your clue broad. If you go later, you will have picked up enough context to be much more precise.

Match the energy, not the word. You don't need to know what the word is — you need to sound like you do. Focus on tone and confidence.

Pick a lane and stay in it. If you say your clue is related to texture, stick to texture throughout. Changing angles mid-round suggests you're guessing.

Don't be too eager to vote. Impostors who push hard to vote someone out early often look suspicious. Let the discussion come to you.

Have a guess ready. Even if you get eliminated, a correct guess of the group word wins the round. By the time the vote happens, you should have a strong candidate.

Variations

Two impostors — Assign two impostors in a larger group (6+). They don't know each other's identity. They must each blend in independently, and the group must find both to win.

Silent round — Players write their clue on paper instead of saying it aloud. All clues are revealed at once. Removes the ability to react to previous clues — the impostor must commit to something without hearing the group first.

Lightning round — 10-second timer per clue. No time to overthink. The impostor either has something or doesn't.

Impostor guesses first — If eliminated, the impostor must guess the word immediately, before anyone confirms whether they were right. Adds pressure and speeds up the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players do you need for Impostor? The game works with 3, but it's much more interesting with 5–8. In very small groups, there are too few clues and the vote feels arbitrary. With larger groups, the deception has more room to breathe.

What if the impostor has no word at all? It's harder, but winnable. The impostor must rely entirely on reading the group's clues and responding to energy, not content. Some players find this version more satisfying to beat.

Can you give the same clue as someone else? Technically yes, but it looks suspicious both ways — the group might think you copied, and if you copied the impostor, they just got a free pass.

What happens on a tie vote? The round ends with no elimination. The impostor survives. You can replay the round with different clues or move on to a new word.

Is Impostor appropriate for kids? Yes, with simpler word pairs from the Easy tier. The social deduction element is fun for older kids, and it doesn't require any adult content to work well.
